Basic Tomato Sauce

Growing up with a dad from Italy, we almost exclusively made sauce from scratch. Simple, no fuss, but absolutely delicious.

I’ve been winging homemade sauce ever since and I’m going to show you how to whip up a super simple tomato sauce in no time!

This sauce is so easy. Sautee onions and garlic (plus any other veggies you want), add tomatoes and additional herbs and that’s it! If you have more time, a little extra simmering brings out the flavor! But if you’re in a rush, just get the sauce heated through and you’re good to go.

Enjoy this over pasta, in baked ziti, or for your own homemade pizza!

The Stuff

  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 onions, diced
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1, 28-oz can of diced tomatoes
  • 1, 28-oz can of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

The Steps

  1. In a covered skillet, sauté the onions, garlic, and oil on medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes stirring occasionally until golden brown
  2. Add the tomatoes and spices and simmer on medium heat for around 15 minutes stirring occasionally
